How to Manually Cycle Whirlpool Ice Maker

User Guide & Troubleshooting Manual

Refrigerator Ice Maker System

Manual Cycling Process

Before You Begin:

  • Ensure refrigerator is properly connected to power
  • Verify water supply line is turned on
  • Check that ice maker is turned ON (control arm in down position)
  • Allow 24 hours for initial ice production after installation

Step-by-Step Manual Cycle Procedure

  1. Locate the Ice Maker: Open the freezer door and locate the ice maker unit, typically mounted on the left side or top of the freezer compartment.
  2. Identify Control Arm: Find the wire control arm or feeler arm that senses when the ice bin is full. This arm should be in the DOWN position for ice production.
  3. Initiate Manual Cycle: Gently lift the control arm to the UP position and hold for 3 seconds, then return to DOWN position. This signals the ice maker to begin a cycle.
  4. Listen for Activation: Within 30 seconds, you should hear the ice maker motor engage and water valve open (a buzzing or clicking sound).
  5. Observe Water Fill: Watch as water fills the ice mold. The fill should take approximately 7-10 seconds.
  6. Monitor Freezing Process: Allow 90-120 minutes for water to freeze completely in the mold.
  7. Check Ice Ejection: After freezing, the ice maker should automatically rotate the mold and eject ice cubes into the storage bin.
  8. Repeat if Necessary: If ice doesn't eject properly, wait 3 minutes and repeat the manual cycle process.
Important: Do not force any components during manual cycling. If resistance is felt, stop and consult troubleshooting section.

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Ice maker won't start manual cycle Control arm not properly positioned, power issue Ensure control arm is down, check refrigerator power connection
No water filling ice mold Water supply valve closed, clogged water filter Check water supply valve, replace water filter if needed
Water fills but doesn't freeze Freezer temperature too warm, thermostat issue Check freezer temperature (should be 0°F/-18°C), adjust if necessary
Ice doesn't eject from mold Ice stuck to mold, ejector mechanism issue Gently tap mold to release ice, check for obstructions
Small or hollow ice cubes Low water pressure, short fill time Check water pressure, ensure proper fill cycle duration
Ice maker making noise but not cycling Motor issue, gear mechanism problem Listen for specific noise type, consult service if grinding occurs

Common Error Indicators

  • Red Light Flashing: Ice maker turned off or malfunction - Check control arm position
  • No Light: Power issue - Check electrical connection to refrigerator
  • Continuous Running Water: Stuck water valve - Turn off water supply and call service
  • Ice Bin Full Light On: Bin sensor triggered - Remove some ice from bin
  • Grinding Noise: Mechanical obstruction - Turn off ice maker and inspect
  • Water Leaking: Loose connection or cracked mold - Check connections and visible damage

Safety Precautions

Electrical Safety

Always unplug refrigerator before performing any maintenance or inspection on ice maker components. Never handle electrical components with wet hands.

Water Safety

Turn off water supply at the shut-off valve before disconnecting any water lines. Have towels ready to catch any residual water in lines.

Freezer Safety

Wear insulated gloves when working in freezer compartment to prevent frostbite. Avoid prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

Component Safety

Do not force any ice maker components. Plastic parts can become brittle in cold temperatures and may break if forced.

Chemical Safety

Use only approved ice maker cleaners. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasives that could contaminate ice or damage components.

Child Safety

Keep children away during maintenance. Small ice maker parts can be choking hazards.
